DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Rich Farmer, London, verge fusee with mock pendulum, 55mm, silver OF pair cases with incuse "C W" marking likely for casemaker Cuthbert Weaver or Clay Whitton, "Farmer London" signed silver champleve dial, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with with beautifully pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock and top-plate furniture, table of balance cock with glass over mock pendulum, s#639 within outer case. Richard Farmer is listed in Briam Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" as apprenticed in 1675, as a member of the Clockmakers' Company from 1683 to 1688, as locating to Abingdon (Berkshire) in 1688 but "maybe returned to London again," and as dying previous to 1732. CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, fully wound and ticks briefly with a twist, overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, excellent gilt tone, main plate with scratches and fine scratches with greatest profusion adjacent pillar to right of signature, balance table glass with small chipping and loss at terminal corners; excellent dial with some fine scratches, some bits of black wax loss to numerals; fine hands with some oxide; outer case shows medium wear, darkened patina, scattered dents with the most significant located at upper portion of bezel, bezel with a puncture adjacent latch area, button latch good, case closes leaving some gap along its upper portion, serial number marking is punched largely entirely through with small punctures of surface; inner case shows medium wear, denting to rear and areas of perimeter, bezel closes leaving some gap to body along left side, hinge pin protruding somewhat at right side, soldered repair of pendant junction evident internally; swiveling pendant with tight bow; domed glass crystal with profuse scratches.
